Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is a common issue that men report to doctors. This medical problem affects approximately 15% of men annually. Over 150 million men throughout the world were estimated to have erectile dysfunction in 1955, and it is projected to increase to 320 million by 2025.

It is important to know that having an erection problem from time to time is not necessarily a problem because it may happen due to anxiety, stress, or the person’s mental state at that moment. If erectile dysfunction is a continuing issue, it can create problems and stress in your relationship, and a doctor should consult and treat it. Causes of erectile dysfunction

During an erection, our nerve release chemicals that increase the blood flow to the penis going into the two erection chamber of the penis composed of spongy muscle tissue known as corpus cavernosum, and such tissue trap the blood in. The blood pressure makes the penis harder, inducing an erection.

When a male has an orgasm, nerve signals reach the penis, contract the corpus cavernosum tissue, and blood gets released back into the circulation system, making the erection go down and the penis return to its normal and soft state. Erectile dysfunction becomes more common when getting older. But it is not a compulsory part of aging and is treatable at any age.

There are many factors contributing to the cause of erectile dysfunction. Some of them are mentioned below.

  • Physical causes
  • Nerve signals can not reach the penis.

Specific injuries, diseases, or surgery can damage the CNS, and signals cannot reach the penis.

  • Not enough blood flow

There is less blood flow to the penis causing inadequate blood pressure inside. Certain health conditions like high blood sugar and heart disease can cause less blood flow to the penis.

  • Cancer treatments near the pelvis

Treatment of cancer near the pelvis region can lead to erectile dysfunction.

  • Emotional or psychological causes

Emotional or psychological factors are a common form of erectile dysfunction, and can develop the condition if you have the following:

  • Depression
  • Low self-esteem
  • Stress at home
  • Fear of sexual failure
  • Relationship problems
  • Lifestyle causes
  • Overweight
  • Not being physically active
  • Intaking illegal drugs
  • Drinking
  • Smoking
